As the vice presidential candidates prepare to square off tonight in their televised debate, it’s important to remember that the role differs by presidency.

Rather than having the job description detailed at length in the Constitution or other founding documents, the role of the vice presidency seems to change depending on the occupant and boss.

One of the vice presidents who appeared to like the role least — John Nance Garner, who served under FDR — memorialized his sentiments in his often-quoted description, that it was “not worth a bucket of warm spit.”
